Wed Night Race 2 Summer Series July 2nd 2003

Another great evening of racing. Big flood tide and a strong northerly kicking up a good chop to make things interesting. The line was quite square so the boats lined up evenly on the line. Wild Turkey looked for a pin end start and Lunch Box getting off on port on the boat side. Both boats made good starts and made a jump out ahead. With a small right shift it got harder for Wild Turkey to tack and consolidate its jump on the left, as the tide was strong and there was a need to move right again. Wild Turkey tacked and just crossed all the boats on the left and headed back to center. Lunch Box crossed by about 2 lengths and Wild Turkey tacked to follow. Lunch Box Wild Turkey and Bad dog setup on the port layline, rounding in that order. All boats doing a tack set at the mark. Lunch Box, and Aliens where the only 2 boats using No 1 Head sail. The 3 was more in control but was short on power in the chop.

Lunch Box had the best set and extended to about 8 lengths. The race was heating up for second, Bad Dog getting on Wild Turkeys air and forcing them to sail high to avoid getting rolled. Both boats trying to get the inside on the way into the leeward mark. Wild Turkey got left and made it stick putting the pole away and flying the spinnaker free so as to push the rounding. Lunch Box round clean followed by Wild Turkey and Bad Dog. Bad Dog had some trouble rounding and Wild Turkey extended. The other Olson's came in close together. Aliens, Surfer Girl, Wyewacket and Orchrist.

The second beat was a bit of a presesion with Lunch Box well in the lead and Wild Turkey covering Bad Dog. Wild turkey busted its main clew strap making it harder to trim the main but held on to second.

The Final run initially saw some nice speed and surfing, but near meadow point and shilshole the wind started to drop. All the boats changed to there No1 on the downwind leg for the short beat home.

Lunch Box got the gun followed by Wild Turkey and Bad Dog. It was a really good showing from Lunch Box. They are looking in top form heading to the Nationals in August. We are sure that Lunch Box and Aliens ate my Buick will  hold the PNW flag high in Santa Cruz for the big event.
